Sonos Arc Ultra vs Samsung HW-Q990D: soundbar or full surround?
The Samsung is the better cinema system out of the box and it is not close — you get the bar, a subwoofer and two rear speakers with their own height drivers, which produces genuine surround sound that a single bar cannot replicate at any price. The Sonos is one bar. What you are buying with Sonos is the ecosystem: it doubles as an outstanding multi-room music system, it looks far better in a living room, and you can add a sub and surrounds later as budget allows. If your priority is films, buy the Samsung. If the bar also has to be the household's music system and you care how it looks, buy the Sonos.

Do the Samsung rear speakers need cables?
They connect to the bar wirelessly, but each rear speaker still needs its own mains power outlet. Check you have points near the back of the room before buying.
Is a soundbar enough, or do I need a receiver?
For the vast majority of New Zealand living rooms, a good soundbar is enough and vastly simpler. A receiver and separate speakers only make sense in a dedicated media room.
